The art of wearing Jewels dates back centuries. Fashion oriented men and women decked themselves out in powder, eye patches, beauty spots and fine costumes. Sparkling and dazzling jewels provided the finishing touches. They used precious metals, gems, and stones as ornaments. Even some organic and inorganic materials such as bones, hairs, leather, feather, scales, ceramics, wood, shells, paper and minerals are used in the jewelry. Many sparkling gemstones are used in the jewelry. Pearl is precious. Pearl is very unique. It is the only gemstone created by a living creature. Pearl is used along with Platinum, Silver and Gold. Strings of pearls are used to make necklace, rings, bracelets, bangles, earrings, nose rings, waistbands, brooches, clips, buttons, hair accessories and watches. Single pearls are used in the earrings, pendants, buttons, broaches and belts. Pearl jewelry is unique. It goes very well with all kinds of dressing. Single string of pearl is much suited for formal dressing. The strand of pearls attached using the gold split rings are suited for traditional dressing.
During the Roman civilization, colored glass was adopted as a substitute for pearls, emeralds, turquoise and other precious stones. Antique fake pearls were constructed with glass beads backed by a thin piece of gold or silver foil - a technique that has continued more or less until the present day. Jewelry design was totally rejuvenated with the advent of the Renaissance. The themes from classical antiquity and mythological and allegorical figures influenced pendants and brooches. Nowadays these fake artificial pearls are known as Imitation pearl. Pearls are characterized by their translucence and luster and by a delicate play of surface color. Pearls come in various colors. The most Pearls range from black to white; the costliest one is the Indian rose pearl. Other colors include cream, gray, blue, yellow, lavender, green, mauve, and champagne. The shape of the pearl is either round or tear drop. Even shapeless pearls are there. These irregular kind of pearl are referred as Blister pearl. The Blister pearl is cheaper than the other type of pearls. Mother of pearl is considered the best.
Men were as interested in fashion as women, and just as likely to spend more on fashion accessories. Men were equally drawn to jewels. Sets of matching buttons were considered essential; some might be set with paste or real gems, while others were ornamented with enamel work. Many of these buttons were purely decorative, rather than functional. Pearls were largely used in these buttons, handcuffs and belts. Globally more youngsters are veering towards buying and owing jewelry. And that explains why individualistic styles of jewelry have many takers abroad. However in India, youngsters prefer to buy jewelry with their elders and their choices are bound by cultural and traditional influences.
